Vacation Views
January 5, 2025
Happy New Year!
Welcome to the latest edition of Vacation Views. This week in my Horizon Scan I am adding some additional top travel trends that I am seeing take hold in 2025, share a reminder in this week’s Traveller Tip on obtaining a UK ETA, and cuing up some deals Sail Savings. So, let’s get started!

Travel Trends: Adding Five for 2025
Building on sustainable souvenirs and vintage thrift shopping, travel is being reshaped by fresh perspectives and adventurous trends. From exploring women’s history to seeking unique dining experiences, here are five more key travel trends to keep an eye on:
Literary Escapes: Travel Inspired by Books Thanks to the influence of BookTok and a return to physical books, literary-inspired travel is having a moment. Celebrities have been spotted traveling with books as accessories, and surveys show that a significant number of travellers are heading to destinations featured in their favourite novels. Literary tourism is growing, with fans visiting locations tied to authors like Jane Austen or Ernest Hemingway. It’s more than just sightseeing—it’s about walking in the footsteps of beloved characters and immersing yourself in the stories that sparked wanderlust. And if you are a literature buff, make sure you ask me about the upcoming Cunard Literature Festival at Sea for 2025 on the Queen Mary 2 in partnership with The Times and Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival sailing in December!
Celebrating Women’s Stories: Museums and Cultural Spaces There’s a growing shift toward more inclusive storytelling, particularly through women’s history. Museums are highlighting the often-overlooked contributions of women, from artists to activists, inviting travellers to reflect on powerful untold narratives. Spaces like the East End Women’s Museum in England and the War and Women's Human Rights Museum in Seoul offer thought-provoking exhibitions that challenge visitors to reconsider historical perspectives and explore empowering stories. As solo female travel continues to rise, these sites are becoming essential stops for those seeking a deeper understanding of the past.
Dining with a Twist: Culinary Adventures in Unexpected Locations Dining is going off the grid in 2025, with unique culinary experiences cropping up in unusual locations. From remote Kenyan mountains to the starry skies of Australia’s Outback, food lovers are seeking out unforgettable meals far from traditional restaurants. Outstanding in the Field offers roving dinners in stunning natural settings, while Sounds of Silence dinners in Uluru combine fine dining with a spectacular stargazing experience. Whether dining under the sea at Ithaa in the Maldives or surrounded by wilderness in Kenya, these experiences make food an adventure in itself.
Women on the Move: Empowering Female Adventurers Adventure travel is being redefined by women seeking thrilling experiences that push boundaries. More women are booking adventure trips—from solo treks to cold-water swimming retreats—and travel companies are responding by prioritizing inclusivity and safety. Intrepid Travel’s women-only tours offer exclusive cultural experiences in places like Saudi Arabia, while outdoor activities like cold-water swimming and mountain treks are attracting more female adventurers than ever. This shift is not only empowering women but also transforming the adventure travel industry into a more diverse and welcoming space.
Off-the-Beaten-Path Travel: Exploring Hidden Gems Forget the typical tourist route—2025 is about embracing detours. Travellers are seeking lesser-known destinations, whether it's a quick stop in Ghent after Brussels, or a dip off the Interstate to visit Tucumcari. One of the joys of detour travel is the freedom to explore unique, off-the-beaten-path spots that offer a slower pace and more personal connection. These charming side trips are perfect for those who want to add an extra layer of history and character to their travels. The rise of train travel that makes it easy to wander off the main path and discover hidden gems that offer a fresh perspective on familiar regions.
In 2025, travellers will continue to embrace a deeper, more authentic approach to exploration. Whether inspired by literature, history, or food, these trends are all about connecting with places in new and meaningful ways.
